Two years ago, I released my very first self-produced single. Signing Off came out on March 5, 2021 and features Christy Rezaii on vocals, as well as Ethan Mansfield (vocals) and Mark Stolpe (bass).
This tune has always been important to me for a number of reasons, but being that it was my first attempt at recording and producing a song under the Trapper’s Attic Records name, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Normally I draw inspiration from Idaho’s wilderness or history when I write original music. Songs inspired by the natural world like mountains, fishing along streams, observing wildlife or reading historic accounts of things that happened over a century ago on the same exact soil I find myself exploring.
But Singing Off was different. I can’t exactly remember what sparked the story, but I had wanted to write a duet-style arrangement between a man and a woman, a sort of call and response. I’d been sitting on the melody for over a year, a melody that always and instantly soothed me when life got dark. It’s sad and melancholic, but at the same time kind of euphoric and dreamy.
